She was Chief of the Name and Arms of Fraser and an elected peer in the House of Lords
Marjorie Flora Fraser, 21st Lady Saltoun, passed away on September 3, 2024, at her home, Inverey House in Ballater in Aberdeenshire. The Chief of the Name and Arms of Fraser married Queen Victoria’s great-grandson, Alexander Ramsay of Mar, and was the only holder of a Scottish Lordship in the House of Lords for decades.
Her father was Alexander Fraser, 20th Lord Saltoun, who served in the House of Lords from 1935 to 1963. When he died in 1979, shebecame the 21st Lady Saltoun and took up his position as a “crossbencher.” In 1984, Lady Saltoun was declared Chief of the Name and Arms of Fraser, as well as the head of the Frasers of Philorth family.
Charles Hay, the Earl of Kinnoull, who currently serves as the convenor of the crossbench peers in the Lords, described her as a “delightful mixture of charm and steel”, as well as being a “very canny person.”
Her eldest daughter, Katharine Ingrid Mary Isabel Fraser, 66, now becomes the 22nd Lady Saltoun and the Chief of Clan Fraser. As well as Katharine, the former peer leaves behind two other children, 63-year-old Alice Elizabeth Margaret Ramsay of Mar and Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Ramsay of Mar, 61, all off who were great-great-grandchildren of Queen Victoria.
