Iain Alexander Gunn of that Ilk, MBE, passed away on October 9, 2024, in Caithness
Iain Alexander Gunn of that Ilk, MBE, Chief of the Clan Gunn, passed away on October 9, 2024, in Caithness at the age of 91. He had held the post of Commander of the Clan since 1972 and was recognized as Chief in 2015. His son, John Gunn of Gunn, noted that “he was instrumental in setting up the modern version of the Clan Gunn Society over 60 years ago and, ever since, he lived and breathed Clan Gunn.” The Gunn was the first Chief of Clan Gunn since the last chief died in1785.
Gunn was born in Thurso in 1933 and read law and economics at the University of Edinburgh. He spent his career as a solicitor with the Shipping Federation in London. Gunn was awarded a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2018 for services to the arts, heritage and the economy in Caithness. Viscount Thurso, the Lord-Lieutenant of Caithness, said: “Iain gave a huge amount back to his native county – not only with the founding of the Clan Gunn Society and museum, but also as a champion of the arts, heritage and tourism.”
